John & Anne Danvers Monument at The Church of St. James the Great, Dauntsey, Wiltshire

This tomb to Sir John and Lady Anne Danvers is located in the chancel, to the left of the altar.  The tomb has brass engravings on the top - a large one which depicts Sir John and Lady Anne dressed as a knight and his lady, and four crests (one in each corner).  There are some sketches of these made in the 1660s - see Plate XVIII on the Wiltshire Collections page.

There is an inscription running around the outside edge (top) which we attempted to photograph; as it is short and wide we needed to photograph it in small sections and piece them together later.  Sadly quite a few of the photographs were blurred, but we have included them here - they are the last four photographs on the page.  John Aubrey noted down the inscription as:

"+ Here lyeth buryed Sir John Danvers knyght sometime Lord this Mannor and patron of this churche in the right of Dame Anne his wyfe the which saied Sir John Danvers the iiijth day of the moneth of Januarie departed this lyfe too transitorie the yeare of our Lord God MCCCCC and xiiij"

It was noticed in May 2004 that someone had tried to prise these brasses from their setting, but fortunately the workmanship proved too good and the brasses remained in place.
