The Church of St. Peter, Little Cheverell, Wiltshire
This tomb is in the churchyard at the church of St. Peter in Little Cheverell. The inscription is now not readable, but information given at the Historic England (HE) website suggests it is the grave of Jane Grouch and others, dated 1762. It is Grade II listed - information about the listing can be seen at the Historic England website.
We do not know where the HE information about the name came from and whilst we are not suggesting it is incorrect, we would like to mention that Census returns and other records show there has been a family with the surname CHURCH in the village but no GROUCH and the names look similar on eroded inscriptions. However, the first Census was 80 years after the date of this tomb and the names in the village will have changed. The cost of this tomb would have been considerable so may be other historical documents could be studied to find the names of wealthy families who could have afforded this memorial.
