Ferndale Junior School, Swindon, Wiltshire
Mandy attended this school about 1969-1973.
Mandy remembers enjoying all the things we did, apart from maths tests each Friday. Mrs Austin was her teacher one year who had a love of music, which Mandy loved too. Mrs Austin taught all the class to play the recorder (Mandy can still taste the Milton fluid the recorders were washed in after each use), and we had a good sing song most days; a favourite was 'The Animals Went In Two By Two' because Mrs. A. would make up her own verses, usually making fun of the pupils. Mrs A. also ran the choir, which Mandy eagerly joined, and loved learning the harmonies to hymns for assembly; she can still remember some of them and thinks of Mrs A. whenever she hears/sings them.
Another favourite activity for Mandy was folk dancing; we practiced after school and even visited a few other schools to share dancing. Mandy's favourite dance partners were Paul Blaylock, Adrian Gannaway and Anthony Robinson but could never decide which one to dance with.
Other friends Mandy remembers are Belinda Moody, Lorraine Galvin, Elizabeth Weston (her cousin), Tracey Lawrence and Alison Ingham (who was brilliant at everything).
Its strange the things one remembers from childhood and Mandy remembers pupils were divided into four teams which were used for things like sports lessons. We had Romans (red. The best team. Mandy was in this team!), Saxons (blue) Vikings (green) and Normans (yellow).
Mr Mainwaring was the Head during Mandy's time, and other teachers included Mr Elliot, Mrs New and Mr Perkins who didn't actually teach her but she knew of him because he ran a guitar club and Mandy was very envious of anybody who had a guitar so could go along.
This was a happy school and Mandy was very happy to be one of its pupils.
