Our photographs are a snapshot in time to show a building's history.
Businesses shown may no longer be trading here.
This property is a bit of an enigma for us. On the one hand it is in a rather run-down part of the town centre (mostly due to all the drinking places around here) but on the other hand, it is such a unique property. As with most shops, the ground floor changes over time with different styles, but the upper floors often remain relatively untouched and so it is with this property. Many of the buildings here were built as shops and they rather put our new buildings to shame - no cheap brick wall with a plastic window in here but windows to show the craftsmenship Swindon is (was) all about. The carved frames must have cost a fortune but there is no doubt these details enhance our experience of being around them. How proud the owner must have been when it was built.
Today we are delighted to see they have not been replaced but their dignity remains intact. Of course all business nowadays is about profit so we do wonder how long it will be before the windows disappear. That small window on the 2nd floor has a plant growing out of the frame - will it be taken care of before damage is caused? And once damaged, how much simpler to remove it than repair it. We can only hope.
Over time the businesses have expanded into neighbouring properties too and the ground floor at least now goes along Bridge Street into at least three other properties.
