Our photographs are a snapshot in time to show a building's history.
Businesses shown may no longer be trading here.
No. 36 Regent Street is located towards one end of main shopping street in Swindon town centre. It features in many old photographs of Swindon as the photographer would stand at the end of the street, facing the long rows of shops. It is due to be knocked down, along with its neighbour to make the alley that goes through to some car parks larger; we understand that area may be re-developed so the wide walkway will be more desirable.
In August 2016 we noticed the previous occupants of the shop had moved out and their signage had been removed which revealed a previous business - Christies. In some of the photographs there is a bit of ghost writing next to the name informing us that Christies had sold luxury fitted bedrooms. In our latest photographs (the first few below) we also see next door's occupants have also gone and their signage also removed to reveal a previous user. Lovely to see these reminders of the past but perhaps not so good to know we are only seeing them because it is the end of the buildings' lives so no more signage for new businesses will be going up.
