No. 37 Regent stands at one end of the main shopping area of Swindon town centre. It appears in many photographs of Swindon going back a hundred and thirty years as photographers have stood here to snap the view along Regent Street, and therefore we can see a few of the changes that have taken place over the many years it has been here, including a bay window on the first floor (replaced with a 'flat' one), and various signs that have been attached. One photograph -
c.1890 photo - shows a large post outside with 'Post Office' written on it, although we don't know if it was advertising that
this shop was the post office or whether it had an arrow directing the viewer further along the road.
The front is built of brick whereas the side is a mixture of the rather lovely Swindon stone and brickwork. Evidence of many alterations or repairs can be seen with its various odd brick/stone work, and look closely at the small area between in and number 36 (at the front) and there are really old nails or ironmongery just showing in places - perhaps where signs or screens were attached.
But all this is coming to and end. No. 36 and 37 are due to be demolished in 2020 to make the small lane much wider. Swindon has lost so much of its character as old buildings have been demolished (and in many cases ugly cheap brick boxes replacing them) in various schemes to make the centre more user-friendly. Although these two buildings may not be architecturally unique they have appeared in so many photographs it will be a shame to see them go.
