Central Church, Swindon, Wiltshire, England

Symbols and Symbolism in Central Church

The Font & Baptistry

Central Church Swindon - photo: 0042

In these octagonal shapes, water circulates from the pool to the font and back down through a series of smaller octagonal pillars, into the pool.

This represents Central Church members' acceptance of the practice of infant and believers' baptism within their ecumenical community.  Water thus becomes the symbol of unity enriched in diversity.  It is also a reminder of Christ's reference to himself as the living water, and of the water that Moses struck from the rock in the wilderness for his thirsty, pilgrim people.

The Stained Glass Window

Central Church Swindon - photo: 0052

This window was designed, built and installed by Mark Angus of Bath, whose windows are to be found in Durham Cathedral and other parts of the country.

The mosaic at the bottom symbolises earth and human technological development.  The central tree of life speaks of God's will for humanity with the rainbow around it being the symbol of God's faithfulness for us.  Above is the sky and the clouds - when we lift our eyes heavenward we become aware of the majesty and the mystery of God.  The drops form a uniting feature of the window - they can be seen as either rain watering the earth, or as the tears of God's love.

The Organ Screen

The organ was built by Messrs Makin of Oldham.  The screen consists of four ranks of solid uprights of various woods and lengths, suggesting a city with rising skyscrapers to remind us of our urban environment.

The Cross

The massive cross was crafted from burnt and brushed hemlock by Don Hatchard of Cricklade.

The Liturgical Furniture

Central Church Swindon - photo: 0055

All the furniture was designed and made by Alex Russell of Bristol.

The carved backs of the chairs below the main cross, represent the Hill of Calvary, the place of Christ's crucifixion with the crosses in the lecterns representing the other two crosses on the hill.

The communion table has three pairs of legs converging from the front to the back signifying Christ's welcome and our approach to the cross.  The twelve exposed joints on the table top are for the twelve disciples seated around the table.

The Central Church Symbol

This symbol depicts the Christian Cross rooted in the world but extending into the flame of the Spirit, all drawn in one line, signifying the wholeness of the kingdom of God.

The Pilgrim Centre Symbol

Central Church Swindon - photo: 0056

This symbol on the wall facing the Cenotaph in Regent Circus consists of two parts - the letters 'P' and 'C'.

The P is an extension of the Ecumenical Boat, the symbol of Christian unity, with the mast forming a cross.

The C, in the same style as the boat, encloses the symbol of Central Church Swindon, signifying the involvement of the church as an integral part of the ecumenical centre.
