The Cenotaph on the island of Portland is inscribed "In Memory of Our Glorious Dead" and remembers those lost from both World Wars. It is set on high land with beautiful views out to sea and the mainland. But what struck us about this memorial is the number of names inscribed - 345 of them. That is a hugh loss for such a small community.
The structure is Grade II listed - more information about the listing can be found at the Historic England website. Information about the cenotaph can be see at the Portland History website: Cenotaph.
Our photographs below are ordered showing the whole memorial on all four sides, decoration details followed by panels of names - each panel has a link underneath to see photographs of the individual columns of names inscribed on it.
We have transcribed the names and they can be seen using the following links:
Should you use our Name Search facility you will see each of the cenotaph names listed three times - once for the transcription, once for the photograph of the panel it is on and also once for the photograph of the individual names. We have not included the photographs of the entire monument to this list.
