The Church of St. Michael, Brimpsfield, Gloucestershire
Back to Photograph
These three medieval tombstones were removed from the Churchyard in 1970. The large stone, bearing a sword carved in relief,
probably commemorates one of the Giffards, lords of Brimpsfield Castle in the 12th or 13th century.
Of the two others, each bearing a ring-cross of Maltese shape, the smaller was probably a headstone and the larger, with an elongated shaft to the
cross, a flat grave slab. Their dates cannot be fixed exactly but they are of the 14th century or earlier. Characterised by this
special form of cross they were probably from the workshop of a local school of craftsmen.
