The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Hullavington, Wiltshire

Transcription of Memorial

Back to photograph

The inscription is rather difficult to read so we have made this transcription.

Neare unto this place lays he body of
Lydia Ivye daughter to George Ivye
Of Hullavington Esq: who departed
This life the 15th day of July 1674.

Stay gentle passenger and cast thine eye
Upon this spectacle of mortallity
Here doth the body of A virgin rest
Whose soule in Heaven is with her Saviour blest
She blessed was with nature guiftes but shin'd
Far more with fuifts and graces of the minde
Meek, Humble, chast, religious and devout
She holy was and happy is no doubt
We all must follow her in mortal state
O that we could her vertues imitate
Deserved prayses might perhaps have mist her
Had not these lines been fixt here by her sister.
                            Katherin Ivye
