The Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England

The church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is located at the end of the main High Street in Marlborough.  It is a very elegant looking building, attractive to the eye, but rather difficult to photograph due to the proximity of other buildings and the trees obscuring it.  The church is now on an island, isolated by roads, but despite being so close to the very busy road, inside is a peaceful haven from the traffic noise.

Although named St. Peter and St. Paul, it is locally referred to as St. Peter.  See the church's website at:  www.stpetersmarlborough.com.

The original church was built in the 1100s, re-built in the 1450s and became a 'redundant' church in 1974.  It is cared for by the St. Peter and St. Paul Trust - and what a fine job they do.  Their dedication and hard work has ensured the building is in good repair and has been saved from decay and ruin.  On a daily basis the church is open and offers a cafe and some craft shops to tempt visitors in.  The church is used for all sorts of occasions and can be hired out for events.  Mandy sang here a few times as part of the Sing for Laughs that local choir-mistress, the late, Vanessa Lafaye organised to raise money for Comic Relief.

During our visit in September 2013, we spoke with one of the Trustees.  What an asset he is to this church!  He brought the burial records for us to read, and treated Duncan to a tour up to the tower roof.  The tower is usually open for visitors to ascend on Saturdays but the Trustees will gladly arrange for other days/times if you cannot make a Saturday.  See the church's website for more details.

But no matter how hard the Trustees work, they still need your support!  If you are in the area, please do go and visit this church as every donation will help.  There are general running costs of over twenty thousand pounds a year and additionally there are the huge ongoing maintenance costs of looking after such an historic building.

The church of St. Peter and St. Paul is a Grade II* listed building - more information about the listing can be found at the:  Historic England  website.

Another interesting website gives a brief history of the church:  Little History  website.
