We have often driven through the village of Ramsbury and on this occasion we stopped to take a few photographs of the parish church, Holy Cross. What a surprise it turned out to be. Instead of a small church typical of the area, we found this large building packed with memorials and other things to interest the genealogist.
Everything was obviously well looked after, and the people we spoke to were friendly and welcoming. Our photographs do not do justice to this wonderful place. There are a couple of history leaflets available inside the church, including a guide around the churchyard, pointing out areas of interest to look out for. The building is Grade I listed - see listing details at the
Historic England website.
We were contacted by Nick Balmer who has been researching his Baber family who resided in Ramsbury. He has lots of information already but would like to hear from new contacts and would especially like to know more about Harry Baber's work in education and the Ramsbury parish. See some of his notes:
Baber information.
Most of these photographs are actually shots captured from a video camera and are of poor quality. We will return to Ramsbury and take some 'proper' photographs when time permits.
