According to the book 'Roadways - The History of Swindon's Street Names' by Peter Sheldon and Richard Tomkins, Albert Street is named after the Prince Consort, Queen Victoria's husband. The street runs parallel to Victoria Road.
Albert Street is located in the Old Town area running almost parallel to Little London on one side and Victoria Road on the other. At one end is Wood Street and the other is a junction with Union Row, Belle Vue Road and Church Road.
It would be fair to say it has had a colourful history but now all that is left is a small terrace of housing and a pub and it goes almost unnoticed admid the busy roads that surround it. The other side to the housing is dominated by buildings which belong to premises on Victoria Road and a car park for their workers.
Our photographs start at the Wood Street end and work our way down to the junction with the three other roads, sometimes looking back as we go!
Our photographs are a snapshot in time to record a building's history.
