Art Gallery
and Apsley House (outside)
We are very grateful to the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery (SMAG) for allowing these photographs to be taken and shown here.
Although some exhibits are on permanent display, many of them are in storage due to lack of space. This means they change what is on view regularly, giving us a change to see more of what they have. Often they follow a theme and there are some regular lunch time talks by the curator about specific collections. We found particularly interesting was the Musical Instruments and a fascinating glimpse at some lovely photographs mostly taken by the Museum's first curator Charles Herbert Henry Gore (1866-1951). Charles had a particular interest in fossils - he even had one named after him - and had a large geological collection which eventually started the idea of creating a museum. We have a rather tenuous link to Charles - his daughter married one of Duncan's Tydeman family.
The building itself has some lovely features, but our photographs are mainly of the exhibits inside - some items on permanent display while others are shown in rotation; and then there are the themed displays. We have mostly grouped our photographs by time they were taken so it will appear we jump from one room to another and then back again. We start with the first we photographed and we would like to thank Mark Sutton and Mike Pringle for their dedication in sourcing material and setting up the 'Swindon in the Great War' display (September 2014 to January 2015). We understand this is the first time that a community group has produced a display in the Museum, and an excellent job Mark, Mike and their team did.
