The Victorian Town Gardens are in the old town area of Swindon. There is so much to explore here as there are small paths taking one to areas unseen from the main walk through. It is a place you are almost guaranteed to see squirrels, which have become tame and very used to us humans wandering around their home. We have put these photographs in roughly the order you would see things if you were to enter the park via the Westlecot Road gates and take the path slightly to the left. There are many smaller paths we didn't take on these visits but no doubt we will return and try to photograph them too.
The Parks Department of the council should be very proud of themselves for their work here, it is always looking beautiful even in the depths of winter. The formal flower beds in spring and summer stand rigidly in their place and compliment the less formal flowing plants as they cascade down rockery walls or hide at the bottom of the tall trees. Some areas are just grass and very tall trees, some areas put to flower beds making this a place most people will find something they enjoy. Roses have become less popular now in our gardens, probably due to the care they need, but in the rose garden area you can see many varieties of roses; the smell is glorious for those few months they are in bloom.
Children love to try to spot fish in the pond and there are all sorts of breeds of birds to be found in the aviary.
The bandstand has been renovated over the last couple of years and looks splendid, and just by it is the cafe. It is a listed building, for further details see the
Historic England website.
Another place of interest is the Bowl - a stage and seating area where plays, concerts and other events take place.
The Town Gardens is a refreshing, peaceful and interesting place to visit.
